Hospice Coding Update

Tuesday, February 11, 2020 * 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. CST


  1. Examine current hospice coding issues including identifying the terminal illness, identifying and coding related diagnoses, and determining unrelated diagnoses. 
  2. Review diagnosis codes that are prohibited from use as a principal (terminal) diagnosis and examples of etiology/manifestation conventions to ensure compliance with applicable coding guidelines and CMS hospice coding directives. 
  3. Discuss hospice scenarios for circulatory conditions, mental health and behaviors, and sign/symptoms coding. 

Target Audience:  Hospice clinicians, primarily nurses, medical directors, agency coders and QA staff.

QAPI for Hospice

Tuesday, February 18, 2020 * 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. CST


  1. Review the 2020 hospice quality measures and the components of quality improvement to ensure compliance with hospice QAPI requirements.
  2. Discuss data sources for target measure selection, action plan development, and best practices for quality care using examples of hospice QAPI projects.

Teresa Northcutt, BSN, RN, COS-C, HCS-D, HCS-H, Senior Associate Consultant, Selman-Holman & Associates LLC

Prior to joining Selman-Holman & Associates, Teresa served as a Program Manager from Primaris, the Quality Improvement Organization for Missouri.  She has presented on-site training for home health agency clinical staff on OASIS assessment and coding, focusing on customized clinical education programs and the practical application of guidelines by field staff.  In addition, she has provided educational programs on agency communications and processes, quality outcome improvement, and care transitions for regional and state conferences. Certified in OASIS competency (COS-C), as a Homecare Coding Specialist-Diagnosis (HCS-D),  and as a Homecare Coding Specialist - Hospice (HCS-H), Teresa brings comprehensive and contemporary knowledge of home care/hospice and quality improvement methods.  Teresa has had experience as Clinical Services and QI/Education manager with home health agencies (independent, hospital-based, and county health dept.), and as a hospital resource nurse, patient educator, and quality improvement facilitator.  She received her BSN from St. Louis University.

Registration Fee: 

  • KHCHA Members:  $110 per live webinar connection; $200 for series
  • Non-Members:  $220 per live webinar connection; $400 for series. 

Registration fees are based on one live phone/webinar connection per webinar offering; multiple site participation for your agency will require a separate registration fee for each connection.  Sharing of registration or fees with other agencies and/or individuals is prohibited.

Recording:  If you are unable to participate in one or more of the live webinars of this series, recordings will be made available online through March 31, 2020.

Registration Deadline:  Those registering for the live presentation must do so at least three days prior.  Registrations to access the recordings (see above) will be accepted through March 31.   

Confirmation:  At least 24 hours prior to each live webinar, a confirmation will be emailed to you.  This confirmation will include the presentation handouts, the sign-in sheet, and evaluation, as well as additional information on accessing the webinar.

CEUs:  Kansas Home Care & Hospice Association is approved as a provider of CNE by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Each course offering is approved independently for 1.5 contact hours applicable for APRN, RN, or LPN relicensure. Kansas State Board of Nursing provider number: LT0287-0314.  APRNs, RNs and LPNs must participate in the entire presentation in order for contact hours to be awarded – partial credit will not be available.  To apply for nursing contact hours, within one week following webinar participation, a completed sign-in sheet and evaluations from each individual must be returned to KHCHA.  Certificates will then be issued by e-mail. 

Cancellations:   Fees will be refunded only if written cancellation is received one week prior to the workshop and no refunds after the dial-in number is sent to your agency. In the event of a written cancellation, KHCHA will retain, or charge, $25 of the initial registration fee, per registrant, to cover administrative overhead.
