Coding of Hospice Cases

Wednesday, December 12, 2012
1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Central Time

The Hospice Conditions of Participation require that the terminal illness and the co-morbidities impacting care must be coded. CMS recently commented that they intend to develop a case mix system for hospice much like the Prospective Payment System developed for home health. To get accurate information for the development of the case mix scoring system, CMS needs hospices to code co-morbidities. Never before has it been more important to get the diagnosis coding correct in the hospice industry. Non-compliance and sloppiness will hurt your payment.

  • Compare the requirements in the CoPs with the Medicare hospice medical policies and claims processing requirements
  • Discuss the coding guidelines for coding neoplasms (they do differ from how we consider cancers as a clinician!)
  • Discuss the coding guidelines for coding non-cancer diagnoses and how they differ from the medical policies.
  • Explain the impact coding incorrectly had on the development of the home health case mix scoring and compare.
  • Discuss steps that need to be taken to improve documentation of the patients’ terminal illnesses and those other conditions that are impacting the care.

Audience: Hospice Executive Directors, Nursing Directors, Hospice Medical Directors, coders, quality personnel, hospice start-ups

Presenter: Lisa Selman-Holman, JD, BSN, RN, HCS-D, COS-C is a home care veteran with 24 years spent in home health and hospice, both as an RN and as an attorney practicing exclusively in home care. She is the owner of Selman-Holman & Associates, LLC, a full-service home care consulting firm and CoDR, a coding outsource, and audit company. Lisa is on the Homecare Coding Specialist-Diagnosis (HCS-D) national advisory board for the Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC), and is a BMSC-approved educator for the HCS-D certification exam. She participated on the Exam Review Task Force for the OASIS Certificate & Competency Board (OCCB). Lisa has the following conflict of interest in regard to this program – she’s a provider of consultative services to the home health industry.

How it Works: Registrants will be sent an email confirmation with information on accessing the webinar and a link to download handout materials and/or resources.  On the day of the webinar, simply join the webinar by clicking on the link in your confirmation and providing the identifying information.
